Cummer and Bold City Links partnership
Through Cummer in the Community, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens partners with the Bold City Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and Tiger Academy, an elementary school operated by the First Coast YMCA. What began as a virtual collaboration during the 2020–21 school year has grown into a dynamic, ongoing partnership that connects students with the arts through meaningful, multi-sensory experiences that celebrate creativity, cultural heritage, and community pride.
This past school year, Tiger Academy’s fourth-grade students visited the Museum and participated in panel discussions featuring Museum professionals and local art entrepreneurs. Guided by their art educator, Tiffany Rodriguez, and inspired by Jacksonville native and environmental activist MaVynee Betsch, “The Beach Lady,” students created artwork that reflects her passion for preserving the natural beauty and cultural legacy of American Beach.
This partnership advances The Links’ mission to expand access to the arts in Black communities and supports the Museum’s mission to create art, garden, and learning experiences that spark discovery and well-being. Together, these efforts nurture young artists and honor the power of art and gardens to connect, inspire, and strengthen our sense of place.
READ USA has demonstrated that illiteracy is solvable with high-interest books and high-quality teaching.
READ USA’s research-backed Literacy Tutoring intervention trains and employs teenagers mostly from under-resourced communities to provide daily, intensive, one-to-one tutoring to elementary students from those same communities. As verified by evaluators from The Ohio State University, this unique intervention produces an average of one year’s growth in reading proficiency in as few as 12 weeks for both elementary students and teens. This bi-directional learning was intentional to elevate both populations’ literacy skills and simultaneously provide valuable Workforce Development skills to tutors.
READ USA’s Professional Development for Educators provides teachers and instructors with the additional training, tools, and resources they need to further move the needle on literacy in the classroom. READ USA provides this training for free to educators at various opportunities throughout the year.
Young Men of Excellence
Young Men of Excellence will navigate by the guiding principle of R.O.A.R.R.R. – Reaching to Overcome Adversity through Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience. This principle reminds our scholars that excellence is achieved not only through what they accomplish, but through how they carry themselves each day.
Our young men will learn to:
Reaching: Strive for personal growth and academic excellence.
Overcome: Face challenges with courage and maturity.
Adversity: View obstacles as opportunities to grow stronger.
Respect: Show kindness and dignity toward self and others.
Responsibility: Be accountable for their choices and actions.
Resilience: Persevere through difficulties and rise with confidence.
Through mentorship, leadership lessons, and collaborative projects, participants will develop the confidence and discipline needed to make positive choices and lead by example.
As a symbol of excellence and leadership, members of the Young Men of Excellence R.O.A.R.R.R. will wear a dress shirt and tie every Thursday to represent unity, discipline, and commitment to excellence.
